A osteoartrite do joelho é altamente prevalente entre pessoas com mais de 50 anos de idade, afetando mais de 250 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, e é responsável por quase 80% da carga da osteoartrite .
Embora haja variação entre países, a prevalência de gonartrose está a crescer na maioria dos países, especialmente no sexo feminino. Espera-se que esta tendência continue à medida que o envelhecimento da população global aumenta.
